In 1968, there was a city-county consolidation of the City of Jacksonville and its surrounding county, Duval County, Florida. With that, Jacksonville became the largest city in the continental United States with over 840 square miles.
Duval comes from William Pope DuVal (1784-1854), the first civilian governor of the Florida Territory, succeeding Andrew Jackson, who had been the first military governor. Like the founder of the Duuuval House, he was a pretty decent lawyer.
The elongation came during the 1990’s. “People in the streets were saying ‘Duval, Duval,’ and I just extended the word and made it long,” recalled Easy E, longtime city DJ. He is a popular DJ at both 93.3 The Beat and V101.5, and is also our founder’s friend and client.
